<image:title>Articles - Saints of January: Gregory of Nazianzus, Gildas the Wise, & Angela Merici - St Angela Merici (January 27th)</image:title>
<image:caption>Angela Merici was born March 21, 1474 in northern Italy and orphaned as a teenager. She joined the Third Order of St. Francis and experienced a vision where she felt compelled to found a “company” of women. She went on to do this at age 60, with 12 other women, founding the Company of St. Ursala. It was the first “secular” institution— in that the women lived in the world and not in a monastery, but were committed to Christ in their lives and actions. She lived her life in service to women and girls in need—educating them, caring for them, and counseling them. Long before she officially formed her order, she had taken girls into her home, teaching them in matters of faith and the world, knowing that without any kind of real education many of these girls had no reliable future in front of them.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Saints of January: Gregory of Nazianzus, Gildas the Wise, & Angela Merici - Saint Gildas the Wise (January 29)</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s believed Saint Gildas was born around 517 in Wales or Northern England. He lived during the decline of Roman Empire, particularly in Britain where a once permanent military presence had been replaced. He is most famous for his outspoken critique of the leaders of Britain. He wrote two works that talked about this specifically: The Destruction of Britian and the Epistle. The Destruction of Britain as written as a moral tale from pre-Roman times where Gildas points out the failures of Britains leadership that led to the destruction of Britian. The Epistle includes sermons addressing the sins of the clergy and rulers at the time. His critique helped create the basis for an increase in monastic tradition and participation less than a century later, as the Roman Empire continued to decline. Gildas lived for many years as a hermit on an island in the Bristol Channel and eventually retired to Rhuys in Brittany where he started a monastery. He died there around 571. Gildas is considered one of the most impactful figures of the early English church, influencing the Celtic Church in particular.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru in 1579 to a Spanish nobleman and a formerly enslaved Black woman from Panama. Because of his mixed race, he grew up facing significant prejudice and strict racist laws. He was raised by a single mother, lived in deep poverty, and was treated as less-than in the society around him — even in the church he longed to serve. And yet Martin became known as the first Black saint in the Americas, and the patron saint of social justice, racial harmony, and public health workers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Saints of November: St. Martin, St. Elizabeth, & St. Clement 1 - Saint Clement I (November 23)</image:title>
<image:caption>Clement lived in the very earliest days of the church, from 35–99 AD. He became the fourth Bishop of Rome — the third successor to Peter — making him a key bridge between the apostles of Jesus and the generations that followed. He is one of the five “apostolic fathers,” those early leaders formed directly by the apostles. Clement himself was a disciple of Peter and Paul, carrying forward their teachings at a time when the church was young, fragile, and growing. Clement is most known for supporting apostolic succession — the belief that the spiritual authority given by Jesus to the apostles was passed down through the laying on of hands by each generation of bishops and leaders. It’s the same idea reflected in the Nicene Creed’s phrase:</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Saints of October: Carlos Acutis, Teresa of Ávila, and Ignatius of Antioch - St. Carlo Acutis (October 12)</image:title>
<image:caption>Born in 1991, Carlo Acutis is often called the first millennial saint. From an early age, he combined his love for technology with his devotion to God. Before his death from leukemia at just 17, Carlo created a website cataloging every known Eucharistic miracle in the world—using the digital tools of his generation to help others encounter the sacred. He showed that holiness isn’t reserved for monks or mystics; it can emerge from coding, curiosity, and creativity. Carlo’s life reminds us that faith is not about age or achievement, but about offering what we have in love.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Saints of October: Carlos Acutis, Teresa of Ávila, and Ignatius of Antioch - St. Teresa of Ávila (October 15)</image:title>
<image:caption>Born in 1515, Teresa of Ávila was a Spanish mystic and reformer whose influence still echoes through the church today. She helped renew the Carmelite order during the Counter-Reformation and wrote one of the great classics of Christian spirituality, The Interior Castle. In it, Teresa compared the soul to a castle filled with many rooms—each one representing a deeper way of living in relationship with God. For her, prayer wasn’t a ritual to perform but a way of being fully alive. Italian sculptor Lorenzo Bernini later captured Teresa’s mystical experience of divine love in his famous statue The Ecstasy of St. Teresa, depicting her vision of being pierced by the love of God “like an arrow to the heart.” Her words still challenge us to slow down and come home to ourselves: “What could be worse than not being at home in our own house? What hope do we have of finding rest outside of ourselves if we cannot be at ease within?”</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Saints of October: Carlos Acutis, Teresa of Ávila, and Ignatius of Antioch - St. Ignatius of Antioch (October 17)</image:title>
<image:caption>Born in Syria, Ignatius of Antioch became bishop of the very city where followers of Jesus were first called Christians.During the reign of the Roman Emperor Trajan, Christians were given an ultimatum: deny your faith and live, or remain faithful and die. Ignatius chose faith. As he was escorted from Antioch to Rome—a journey of nearly 1,800 miles—he wrote seven letters to Christian communities along the way. His words encouraged them to remain steadfast in their faith and to love one another deeply. Tradition holds that Ignatius was eventually martyred by lions in the Colosseum. His letters became part of the writings known as the Apostolic Fathers, a bridge between the apostles and the early church. Some traditions even suggest that Ignatius and his friend Polycarp were disciples of the Apostle John himself. His life and his letters remind us that courage doesn’t erase fear—it chooses faithfulness in the face of it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Saints of September: Hildegard of Bingen, Cosmas, and Damian - Feast Day: September 17</image:title>
<image:caption>Born in 1098 in Germany, Hildegard of Bingen was what we might today call a Renaissance woman—though she lived centuries before the Renaissance. She was a writer, composer, philosopher, mystic, and even a medical writer. Her music, often written for use in worship, still resonates today, and she even composed a full musical morality play, Ordo Virtutum. From the time she was a young girl, Hildegard reported receiving vivid visions. She described them as seeing “all things in the light of God through the five senses: sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch.” For years she hesitated to share them, fearing misunderstanding or rejection. But eventually Pope Eugenius himself encouraged her to write them down, affirming their authenticity as gifts of the Holy Spirit.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Saints of September: Hildegard of Bingen, Cosmas, and Damian - Feast Day: September 26</image:title>
<image:caption>Cosmas and Damian were twin brothers, born in Arabia in the 3rd century, who trained as physicians. Unlike many of their peers, they practiced medicine without charge, healing bodies as an expression of their faith in Christ. Their compassion and generosity drew many people to Christianity, showing that love in action often speaks louder than words. They lived in the Roman province of Cilicia (modern-day Turkey) at a time when Christianity was spreading but still deeply contested. Under the emperor Diocletian, Christians faced waves of persecution. Diocletian was committed to restoring Rome’s “Golden Age,” which meant a return to traditional gods and rituals. Christianity was seen as a threat to this vision.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Saints of August: Bernard of Clairvaux, John the Baptist, and Monica</image:title>
<image:caption>Born near Dijon, France, in 1090, Bernard of Clairvaux was both a mystic and an influential leader of the Cistercian monastic movement. As an abbot, he founded 163 monasteries, and his influence extended far beyond the cloister. Bernard’s writings earned him the title “doctor of the church,” given to those whose teaching has significantly shaped Christian theology. He emphasized the importance of love over fear as a motivator for change: “Neither fear nor self-interest can convert the soul… Only charity can convert the soul, freeing it from unworthy motives.” He also saw creation as a profound teacher: “You will find something far greater in the woods than in books. Stones and trees will teach you that which you cannot learn from the masters.” Bernard’s legacy reminds us to learn from God’s world and to let love — not fear — shape our actions.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Saints of August: Bernard of Clairvaux, John the Baptist, and Monica</image:title>
<image:caption>John the Baptist’s life and ministry were marked by boldness and unwavering devotion. Known as the one who prepared the way for Jesus, his story is told in all four Gospels. The Jewish historian Josephus records that John’s death took place at the fortress of Machaerus near the Dead Sea, a site you can still visit today in modern-day Jordan. In Matthew 14 and Mark 6, the Gospels recount how John’s fearless truth-telling led to his imprisonment and execution. Remembering John invites us to reflect on what it means to live courageously — speaking truth even when it is costly, and staying faithful to God’s call.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Saints of August: Bernard of Clairvaux, John the Baptist, and Monica</image:title>
<image:caption>St. Monica is perhaps best known as the mother of St. Augustine, one of Christianity’s most influential theologians. Born in what is now Algeria, Monica’s life was marked by steadfast prayer and perseverance. Her husband and son did not initially share her Christian faith. Augustine, in particular, famously lived a wayward life for many years. Yet Monica’s unceasing prayers and faithful example eventually played a key role in both her husband’s and son’s conversions. Augustine would later credit her persistence as a turning point in his own journey. Monica is remembered today as the patron saint of wives and mothers — a symbol of hope for anyone who is praying and waiting for transformation in a loved one’s life.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Feast Day - June 1st Justin was born in the year 100 in Palestine and died in Rome, Italy. He was born into a Jewish family and started following Jesus as an adult, possibly in Turkey, after studying different philosophies that were not based in faith. One of his most famous writings was written to two different Roman Emperors, Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelios. In it, he defended Christians and tried to convince these emperors not to charge Christians with hostility to the Roman state. His unique approach to Christian philosophy was his belief that Christianity—when explained intellectually—was in “harmony with reason,” like Platonic philosophy. He saw both as emphasizing the “relationship between human reason and the divine mind.” Jesus was the perfect representation of this idea. Thanks to Justin, we have descriptions of how the early church celebrated baptism and Communion and in his writing he was the first person to quote from the book of Acts. He was martyred for his faith.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Feast day – June 4th (Image by Gracie Morbitzer) Mary Elizabth was one of 13 children in her family, born in Sweeden on Jun 4th, 1870. She learned what it meant to follow Jesus when she left home, moved to New York, and studied nursing where she took care of many patients who were Catholic, and introduced her to Christianity. Her faith, and then finding herself being taken care of by the Carmelite sisters of St. Bridget when she became sick, made her want to bring this religious order of nuns to other places in the world—including Sweeden, England, Rome and India. During World War II she worked very hard to improve the communication between those who were Christians and those who were not, and worked hard to help the poor and others who were at risk during this time. Because of her work, she is responsible for saving the lives of over 60 Jewish people during the Holocaust and she is remembered as a “Righteous Among nations” – a title given to people who helped aid Jewish people, and others, who were being targeted by Germany, Romania and Italy during WWII. She died April 24, 1957.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Exploring Saint Feast Days with Your Kids - St. Aloysius Gonzaga</image:title>
<image:caption>Feast Day – June 21st Aloysius Gonzaga was born into an incredibly wealthy and noble family in Italy on March 9, 1568. His family had plans for him to eventually have a military career and he was sent away starting at 8 years old to prepare for this. But Aloyius became very sick and was unable to continue getting his education. While he was recovering, he felt like he should become a priest instead. Even though his family had other plans for him, when he was 18 years old, in 1586 he told his family he was joining the Society of Jesus—the Jesuits—and renounced the land and title that was his birthright. He continued his studies at Roman College after becoming a Jesuit. In 1591 a plague came to Rome and Aloysius volunteered to work at the hospital where the sick and infected were taken. He fed them, cared for them and cleaned them in the midst of their sickness, and as a result he got sick himself. He died on June 21, 1591 at 23 years old, and is known now for his care for others even when it cost him his own health and life, and for doing this at such a young age.</image:caption>
